Thyroid Disorders and Surgeries

Understanding the Thyroid Gland

The thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped organ located in the neck, plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, energy production, and overall hormonal balance. Any disruption in its function can lead to thyroid disorders, affecting your health and quality of life.

Common Thyroid Disorders

  • Hypothyroidism:

    • A condition where the thyroid produces insufficient hormones.
    • Symptoms: Fatigue, weight gain, dry skin, depression, and cold intolerance.
  • Hyperthyroidism:

    • Excessive production of thyroid hormones.
    • Symptoms: Weight loss, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, sweating, and irritability.
  • Thyroid Nodules:

    • Lumps or growths in the thyroid gland, which may be benign or cancerous.
  • Goiter:

    • Enlargement of the thyroid gland, often caused by iodine deficiency or hormonal imbalances.
  • Thyroid Cancer:

    • A rare but serious condition requiring prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Thyroid Surgeries

1. Thyroidectomy (Partial or Total Removal of the Thyroid)

When medication or other treatments fail, surgery may be needed.

Indications for Thyroidectomy:
✔ Large goiters causing breathing/swallowing issues
✔ Thyroid cancer
✔ Overactive thyroid (Hyperthyroidism not controlled with other treatments)

Types of Thyroidectomy:

  • Total Thyroidectomy: Complete removal of the thyroid
  • Partial Thyroidectomy (Lobectomy): Removing a section of the thyroid
